International Mother Tongue (2024) @ NWU (2)
International Mother Language month was concluded with Language Portraits hosted by the NWU Language Directorate. Students were encouraged to make Language Portraits explaining the languages they are proficient in, as well as the languages they would love to learn. The students who represented the most diverse languages, and showed tremendous enthusiasm for multilingual education received a special BAQONDE prize!

As part of International Mother Tongue month in February the NWU Language Directorate hosted some fun multilingual events on campus. BAQONDE was well represented, and the students received instructions on how to access Polokelo to assist them in writing multilingual academic assignments.
3rd BAQONDE Showcase of Best Practices (video)
The purpose of this exciting dissemination event was to present 2 of BAQONDE project’s main activities: (1) our multilingual online open access repository of materials and (2) our schools outreach activities, schools pack and teacher guidelines. With a very diverse audience, including school teachers, we reported on what we have been doing to advance the use of African languages at all levels of South Africa’s education system and delved into a vibrant discussion.
BAQONDE returns to CoPAL
The 3rd CoPAL-Vice Chancellors Colloquium on Language Policy for Higher Education hosted by the University of KwaZulu-Natal (December 5-6, 2023) had a panel session on “MODELS FOR CAPACITY BUILDING” featuring BAQONDE. This session was moderated by Prof. Mantoa Montinyane (UWC; IB of ALDUS) and presented by BAQONDE leads Prof. Bassey Antia (UWC), Prof. Nobuhe Hlongwa (UKZN), Prof. Dion Nkomo (RU) and Dr. Kea Seshoka (NWU).
Multilingualism in action at university: a dialogue between South Africa and the Netherlands
A BAQONDE showcase event organised at the University of Groningen facilitated an exchange on the theme of “Multilingualism in Action in Higher Education”. This event gathered different members of the BAQONDE project, as well as other university colleagues and students and allowed for a constructive dialogue between the different actors of everyday multilingualism in our workplace. Similarities and contrasts between the Netherlands and South African institutions were highlighted through a discussion on the challenges to overcome and the tools that can help to find a way forward.

BAQONDE and collaborators launched the 2nd African Languages Day
The BAQONDE project, along with an increasing number of national and international collaborators, launched the second edition of African Languages Day at the University of Salamanca.
Plenary session at the 5th Biennial Language Research Symposium
Dr. Gugulethu Mazibuko presented the BAQONDE project at the “5th Biennial Language Research Symposium” which was specifically dedicated to elevating the status and advaning the use of indigenous language for teaching, learning and research in Higher Education Institutions.

Plenary sessions at the Southern African Linguistics and Applied Linguistics Society Conference
Prof. Bassey Antia and Prof. Nobuhle Hlongwa, keynote speakers at SALALS 2023 (3-6 July), addressed the challenges of indigenous languages in Primary and Higher Education, featuring BAQONDE.
2nd BAQONDE Showcase of Best Practices
As in our first edition, the purpose of this dissemination event was to disseminate some examples of best practices in fostering the use of African languages in Higher Education. More specifically, this BAQONDE 2nd Showcase was dedicated to translanguaging in the class context and multilingualism in healthcare training. It also brings attention to the newly established digital repository for African language resources within the BAQONDE project.
Launch of the Polokelo
The launch of our inter-institutional repository POLOKELO is one of the milestones in the lifetime of the BAQONDE project. This space serves as a platform for sharing teaching and learning materials among Higher Education Institutions in the context of South Africa, fostering collaboration and advancing education in indigenous languages.
Our Plenary at the first BATHO ABANTU AFRICAN LANGUAGE ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE (BAALA)
In this plenary session we shared the vision and hard work of the BAQONDE partner universities on the ground level. Leading scholars representing all language groups engaged in a fruitful discussion that will foster inter-institutional collaboration in the short and long term.

Reception: Spanish Consulate
Two members of the BAQONDE team form the University of Salamanca have been formally invited by the Consul of Spain (Jesús Silva Fernández) during their stay in Cape Town due to the BAQONDE workshop organized by the University of the Western Cape. In our search for future collaborations that secure the legacy of BAQONDE, it was also a pleasure to be accompanied by Álvaro de la Cruz-Dombriz, President of The Society of Spanish Researchers in Southern Africa (ACE del Sur de Africa)
The BAQONDE project, in collaboration with the Language Departments of English and Spanish at the Faculty of Philology, establishes the African Languages Day at the University of Salamanca.
The African Languages Day (2022) symbolized the establishment of a communication bridge between Salamanca and Africa — a bridge that we strive to maintain as an enduring gateway for contact, comprehension, mutual learning, dissemination, and other endeavors.
Presentation Part 2: University of Mpumalanga
In this second online seminar to colleagues at the University of Mpumalanga, Prof. Rosemary Wildsmith (NWU) placed a special focus on setting up their Language Policy for their institution. BAQONDE goals and examples of inter-institutional collaboration were shared. The local committee has expressed their intention to continue their collaboration with our project members /goals.

Under the auspices of BAQONDE, the newly constituted Language Policy committee of the University of Mpumalanga invited Prof Rosemary Wildsmith-Cromarty (NWU) to give two workshops on Language Policy and Implementation in order to help them clarify their goals and the processes to follow in creating the institution’s official language policy. In this first session, it became clear that they would essentially need to create an ALDU or equivalent. They are keen to sustain a connection with us which is one of the aims of BAQONDE,i.e. inter-institutional collaboration.

Prof. Bassey Antia, University of the Western Cape, presents the aims and outputs of the BAQONDE project to Prof. James Hadley (Director) and colleagues at the Trinity Centre for Cultural and Literary Translation in its headquarters in the historic centre of Dublin. The Centre’s mission is to develop, promote and support literary translation in Ireland, to bring the best of Irish literature to the world and the best of world literature to readers in Ireland. The information session focused on topics including translation of literature, technology in translation and events such as translation slams. The Centre is keen to forge links with African partners in the area of literary and cultural translation. Translation and translation technologies play a central role in the multilingual language practices within the BAQONDE project.

Presentation of the BAQONDE Project at the 9th ABS Forum on “The rescue and valorization of indigenous languages (Center of Brasilian Studies). Prof. Racquel Valério (researcher at GEFOHPE/UFC and the Ibero-American Institute) has underlined the need of exploring potential partnerships and developing similar strategies/projects in the context of Brasil.

The Chair of the Universities South Africa (USAf)’s Community of Practice for African Language Teaching and Learning (CoPAL), Prof. Langa Khumalo, invited Prof. Pedro Álvarez-Mosquera to share the vision of the BAQONDE Project in a virtual colloquium with representatives on behalf of the 26 South African public universities.
